> A locksmith's best-paid hour often starts at 2 am with someone on a doorstep in socks. The worst-billed one is the rekey that ran forty minutes over and never reached the invoice. Between the two sit commercial accounts with many doors, a car lockout on a highway shoulder, and a drawer of cylinders bought on the way. We compared seven iPhone apps on whether they put the night rate on the right call and keep every part on the job.

## Quick answer

Quick answer: ServiceM8 and Housecall Pro suit a locksmith business with several mobile technicians and someone dispatching calls. Punch or HoursTracker are enough for an employed locksmith who only needs a record of hours. For the one-van locksmith who answers the phone and bills customers directly, iTimeSheet is our pick: a night rate on a single call, property managers with a site per building, parts receipts on the job, and invoices on the Studio tier.

Locksmiths lose money in two quiet places: the call-out rate that was agreed on the phone and forgotten by morning, and the parts that were bought between calls and never matched to a job. Many apps handle neither, because they were designed for shift workers or for office teams. We looked at how each one deals with rates that change after dark, commercial accounts with dozens of doors, and small parts on almost every call.

The seven apps below come from the US App Store, judged on the criteria that follow, with facts taken from their own listings and ratings dated at the top of the page. iTimeSheet is our app, and it was held to the same criteria; we name its limits, including no card payments at the door, as plainly as anyone else's.

## What to look for

We ranked for a trade with unpredictable call-outs, rates that change after dark and small parts on every job.

- **A night rate on one call** — The 2 am lockout bills at a different rate from the Tuesday rekey for the same property manager. The app should override one entry, not the whole customer.
- **Commercial accounts with several sites** — A property manager or a store chain is one client with many doors. Each building needs its own place under that client so the invoice makes sense.
- **Parts on the job** — Cylinders, deadbolts and key blanks belong to a call. A receipt pinned to it gets billed; one in the door pocket of the van does not.
- **Start in one motion** — You are already at the door. A Watch tap or a Lock Screen button beats unlocking the phone and hunting for an app.
- **Customer data you keep** — Addresses and notes about the doors you service are sensitive. We favored apps that keep them on the phone rather than in a vendor database.

## The ranking

### 1. iTimeSheet: Best for one-van locksmiths who invoice — <https://apps.apple.com/us/app/itimesheet-hours-invoices/id287629482>

_5.0 ★ · 1 ratings · US App Store_

**The night rate on the call, the cylinder on the job, the invoice the next morning**

For a locksmith, the Client, Mission and Task tree reads as client, site and call. A homeowner is a client with one site; a property manager is a client with a mission per building. Rates cascade from the client, and the 2 am lockout gets an override on that single entry. The timer starts from the app or the Apple Watch, and on Pro from the Lock Screen or the Dynamic Island; switching to the next call saves the previous one with its duration.

On Pro, a parts receipt is photographed and attached to an expense pinned to the call. The fourteen presets include Hardware and Mileage; a category for cylinders or key blanks is created once. On Studio, the Invoices tab shows each client's un-invoiced amount, and one tap makes the PDF with a logo, sequential numbering, the US layout and payment details, while property managers get their payment terms from the billing profile. Overdue invoices come with a pre-filled chase e-mail, and credit notes cancel an invoice that went out wrong.

Data lives in a local database on the phone, with no account and no vendor server. Manual iCloud backup is available on every tier and automatic daily backup from Essential. The limits: no card payments at the door, no dispatch, one user, iPhone and Apple Watch only with no iPad version yet, and CSV export instead of an accounting connector.

- **Strengths:** Per-entry rate override for night and weekend calls; Commercial clients with a mission per building; Receipt photos attached to the call on Pro, with Hardware and Mileage presets; No account and no vendor cloud; addresses stay on the phone
- **Limits:** No card payments at the door; No dispatch or second technician; iPhone and Apple Watch only; no web app, no iPad yet; One US rating since the July 2026 relaunch
- **Best for:** A one-van locksmith who serves homeowners, drivers and a few commercial accounts and sends their own invoices.
- **Pricing:** Free covers 3 clients and 2 entries a day. Essential is $4.99/mo or $29.99/yr for unlimited entries, reports, export and daily backup. Pro is $7.99/mo or $59.99/yr for receipt photos, the presets and the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island timer. Studio is $9.99/mo or $89.99/yr for invoices; it has no free trial, but a watermarked invoice preview shows your real PDF first.

> ★★★★★ **A very useful app!** — « I started out with the lite version & liked this app so much I purchased the full app.
Im just a blue collar worker servicing 1/2 a dozen accounts a day within 100 miles of my plants location. I was having problems with overtime because my work load had been increased but I was expected to stay under 40 hours because the supervisors "thought" a certain service call "should" only take so much time.
Using iTimesheet I was able to track my complete day from clocking in to work, arrivals & departures at clients, lunch breaks & clocking out at the end of the day.
I then exported all this info to excel & after a couple of months I was able to complie all this information to help my company stop the guess work concerning how long it should take to service a client & make us more efficient by showing the actual service times.
This created an average that we now use to determine labor cost & service charges.

I came out smellin' like a rose! »

### 2. ServiceM8: Best for shops with mobile techs

_Eroldawn Pty Ltd · 4.5 ★ · 848 ratings · US App Store_

**Job cards for locksmiths, with staff on a map**

ServiceM8 names locksmiths among the trades it was built for: job cards, quotes, staff locations, invoicing and payments, on a subscription with an account. For a shop with several mobile technicians it runs the day, which is beyond what iTimeSheet does; for one locksmith it is more than needed.

- **Strengths:** Trade-specific job cards and quotes; Invoicing and payments; Staff locations
- **Limits:** Subscription and account required; Data on the vendor's servers; Heavy for one person
- **Best for:** A locksmith business with several mobile technicians.
- **Pricing:** Subscription

### 3. Housecall Pro: Best for dispatch and payments

_Codefied Inc. · 4.7 ★ · 30,906 ratings · US App Store_

**Dispatch, invoicing and payments at company scale**

Housecall Pro schedules, dispatches, invoices, takes payments and markets to customers, on monthly plans, with more than thirty thousand US ratings. Built-in payments are the feature a lone locksmith may envy; the company subscription is the price.

- **Strengths:** Dispatch and scheduling; Invoicing and payments; Customer marketing tools
- **Limits:** Priced for a business; Account and vendor cloud; Overkill for one van
- **Best for:** A locksmith company with a dispatcher and several vans.
- **Pricing:** Subscription

### 4. Jobber: Best for crews on QuickBooks

_Octopusapp Inc · 4.8 ★ · 21,250 ratings · US App Store_

**Quotes, dispatch and QuickBooks sync for a crew**

Jobber handles quotes, scheduling, dispatch, invoices, payments and QuickBooks sync, on monthly plans built for a crew, and it is very well rated on the US store. It wins on teams, payments and accounting sync; for one person it loses on price and on data ownership.

- **Strengths:** Quotes and payments; Scheduling and dispatch; QuickBooks sync
- **Limits:** Monthly plans for a company; Account required; Heavy for one locksmith
- **Best for:** A locksmith business with several techs and an office.
- **Pricing:** Subscription

### 5. HoursTracker: Best for employed techs who log hours

_Cribasoft, LLC · 4.8 ★ · 56,323 ratings · US App Store_

**The proven hours log for an employed tech**

HoursTracker tracks jobs, breaks and pay, exports CSV and can remind you to clock in at a saved place, with more than fifty thousand US ratings. It has no invoices or receipts, and an account is optional, only for cloud backup.

- **Strengths:** Pay, breaks and CSV export; Geofenced reminders; Account optional
- **Limits:** No invoicing; No receipts; No client and site hierarchy
- **Best for:** A locksmith employed by a company who keeps a personal record of hours.
- **Pricing:** Free with in-app purchase

### 6. Punch Time Clock: Best for the simplest punch clock

_Trent Morris · 4.8 ★ · 36,264 ratings · US App Store_

**A time clock, unlocked once**

Punch is a simple clock-in and clock-out app with PDF and CSV timesheets and a one-time Pro unlock, without an account. It has more than thirty-six thousand US ratings, but its last update dates from April 2025, so it is worth testing on your iOS version.

- **Strengths:** No account; PDF and CSV timesheets; One-time Pro unlock
- **Limits:** No invoicing; Last updated April 2025; No clients or sites
- **Best for:** An employed locksmith who wants the simplest possible punch clock.
- **Pricing:** Free with in-app purchase

### 7. Time Tracker Pro: Best new pay-once option

_Pimentel Services Ltd · No ratings yet on the US App Store_

**A new pay-once tracker with GPS and a Watch app**

Time Tracker Pro is paid once, keeps data on the device, clocks in by GPS, exports PDF and CSV reports and has an Apple Watch app. It was released in October 2025 and had no US ratings on the date above, so its listing is all there is to judge it by.

- **Strengths:** One-time purchase, no account; GPS clock-in; Apple Watch app
- **Limits:** No ratings yet on the US store; No invoicing; Job list only
- **Best for:** A locksmith who wants a private, pay-once hours log and is willing to try a new app.
- **Pricing:** One-time purchase

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best time tracking app for locksmiths?

For a locksmith business with several mobile technicians, ServiceM8, Housecall Pro or Jobber handle dispatch and payments. For an employed locksmith, HoursTracker or Punch keep the hours. For the one-van locksmith who invoices customers directly, we rank iTimeSheet first: a per-call night rate, a mission per building for commercial accounts, parts receipts on the job and invoices on Studio, all on the phone without an account.

### Does the app work in a parking garage with no signal?

iTimeSheet does. It keeps everything on the phone and never waits for a network, and the Apple Watch queues its taps away from the phone and backdates them when reconnected. A connection is needed only for the iCloud backup and the App Store purchase.

### Where are customer addresses stored?

In iTimeSheet, in a local SQLite database on the iPhone, with no account, no vendor server, no analytics SDK and no ads. Backup is one file in the user's own iCloud Drive, daily and automatic from Essential. The App Store label lists a device identifier, purchases and usage data, none linked to the user and none used for tracking. The field-service suites store customer data on their own servers.

### Can you take card payment at the door?

Not through iTimeSheet. Its Studio invoice PDF carries payment details such as routing and account numbers and free-text instructions, and the invoice is marked paid when the money arrives. Taking a card at the door needs a separate terminal or a suite with built-in payments such as Housecall Pro or Jobber.

### What does a US locksmith invoice need?

The US has no national list of mandatory invoice fields beyond identifying the business, the customer, the work and the amount; sales tax on parts and labor depends on the state. iTimeSheet's Studio tier uses a US layout with sequential numbering per year, the client's billing profile and payment terms, and your bank details. It does not compute sales tax.

### How should a property manager with twenty buildings be handled?

In iTimeSheet, make the manager the client, with their billing profile and payment terms, and each building a mission under it. Every call lands on its building, Reports show hours per building with drill-down from Essential, and the Studio invoice covers whatever is un-invoiced for that client.

## The bottom line

With several technicians and a dispatcher, ServiceM8, Housecall Pro or Jobber are the right tools. An employed locksmith can keep their hours with HoursTracker, Punch or the newer Time Tracker Pro.

For the locksmith who answers their own phone, iTimeSheet is the first install: the 2 am call carries its own rate, the cylinders sit on the job, commercial accounts keep their buildings in order, and customer addresses never leave the phone.
